Gracie Eggleston here!
Welcome to the Realm of Reading. So happy you could join me on this adventure in literacy.
I graduated from Moore High School in 2016 and, after a soul-searching gap-year, landed at Southwestern Oklahoma State University where I earned my Bachelor's in Secondary English Education in 2022. I, like many from my district, returned home to Moore and took up teaching 8th grade Reading at a Title 1 middle school that I had actually attended in 8th grade. It was an adventurous two years before I landed at my current school teaching 7th grade Reading. While I used to get fired up about the comments of, "It takes a special person to work in junior high," I've come to agree. We are one chaotic bubble of weirdness and I wouldn't have it any other way! The little humans and big humans are scary. Give me the medium humans!Love your faces! Be a Good Human!
This is the last thing my kiddos hear from me as they leave my classroom. If I could scream it from every rooftop I would. My explanation is along the following: this world is full of things we cannot control, but what we CAN control is ourselves. We have no idea what someone else’s life looks like outside of school, and we do not have the right to add to their chaos. It’s our most serious conversation of the year. At the end of the day, my ultimate goal is to help my students be the best human they can possibly be.
On top of my days with my middle schooler goobers, I am a mentor for two first-year teachers in my building, participating in LETRS training in my district, and hosting college observers on their journey into education. Why not add graduate school on top of that?! This is my first semester in the ILAC - Reading Specialist program and I am both excited and absolutely terrified. Thankfully, my best friend and I decided to jump into grad school together! We are having our own little bedlam experience as she is in the Agricultural Education and Leadership program at Oklahoma State. If anyone has good coffee shop/study spot recommendations, please let me know. We’re going to need them!
Reading is POWER.
I truly believe that the world of education is where I am meant to be. Right now, my ultimate goal with continuing my education is to strengthen my skills in reading and literacy to better serve my students. It has become remarkably common for students to move up to us with low reading skills, and I hope that this journey will give me the tools to continue to help them grow.
I am so excited for this journey and opportunity for connection with you!
